Travel to Tromsø and Lyngen

 

Here is a summary of the various travel options to Tromsø, and details of onward connections to other scenic destinations in Northern Norway:

Air   

The following airlines offer direct flights to Tromsø. Onward connections to other parts of Norway or overseas destinations entailing a change of flights are not listed here. Flight bookings can be made on-line, via a travel agency or direct via the respective airline.

Passengers travelling to Oslo from overseas and flying on to Tromsø should be aware that some budget airlines fly to Torp/Sandefjord (TRF) south of Oslo and not Oslo International Airport Gardermoen (OSL). For passengers who choose to fly to Torp, please visit www.torp.no for more information. There are direct flights from Torp to Tromsø. Boat

The Coastal Express Steamer (Hurtigruten)

Has daily departures both northwards and southwards all year round. (Please note that some sailings are cancelled during winter.)

* Northwards from Tromsø at 6:30 pm.

Approximate travel times are: Hammerfest (11 hours), Honningsvåg near North Cape (18 hours) and Kirkenes (40 hours).

* Southwards from Tromsø at 1:30 am.

Departs Tromsø: 1:30 am. Approximate travel times are: Harstad (7 hours), Svolvær (17 hours), Bodø (24 hours), Trondheim (54 hours) and Bergen (85 hours).

Express boats

Harstad (2 hrs 30 mins) / Finnsnes (1 hr 15 mins): 2-4 departures daily in each direction.

Skjervøy: 1-2 departures daily.

Ferries

Most ferries in the northern part of Nordland County and in Troms County are operated by Torghatten Nord . Such ferries include Vikran – Larseng, Hansnes – Karlsøy – Vannøy and Skarberget – Bognes.

Bjørklids Fergerederi operates the following ferry connections in Lyngen/Tromsø/Kåfjord: Breivikeidet – Svensby and Lyngseidet – Olderdalen.

Summer only routes Brensholmen (Tromsø) – Botnham (Lenvik, Senja) and Gryllefjord (Senja) – Andenes (Andøy, Vesterålen) are operated by Senja Fergene. These ferries operate from mid-June until mid-August. For more information, please visit www.senjafergene.no.

Bus

All buses departing Tromsø are operated by TIRB. For timetables and other information, please visit www.177troms.no. For long distance transport, TIRB co-operates with NOR-WAY Bussekspress. For information on bus transport in Finnmark, please visit www.ffr.no.

 

Most public transport does not operate on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. A reduced service is offered on Boxing Day and other public holidays during Easter, Ascension Day and Pentecost. There are generally few, if any, buses and boats between late Saturday afternoon and early Sunday afternoon. This information is intended as a guide and we recommend you check directly with the service provider.

Southwards

There are direct bus connections from Tromsø to Narvik. From here, you can travel by bus to Lofoten or bus to Fauske and then continue on to Trondheim by train. There is also a train connection between Narvik and Kiruna (Sweden), which continues to other destinations in Sweden and Finland. Please refer also to information on the Coastal Express Steamer (Hurtigruten).

 

To/from Narvik

4 hrs 30 mins. Three bus departures daily, 2 each on Saturday and Sunday.

Train to Sweden

Narvik – Kiruna (3 hours): 2 departures daily. Onward connections to Boden, Luleå, Haparanda (Finnish border) and Stockholm.

Bus Tromsø – Fauske

One bus departure daily (13 hours, including change in Narvik), which corresponds with the night train to/from Trondheim.

Train Fauske – Trondheim

9 hours. One day and one night departure in each direction. www.nsb.no

Buss Tromsø – Lofoten (Svolvær)

(11 hours) One departure daily in each direction, changing buses in Narvik.

 

Bus/express boat Tromsø – Lofoten (Svolvær) via Harstad

One connection daily.

 

Northwards

Tromsø – Alta

7 hours. One daily departure (afternoon) in each direction.

Tromsø – Honningsvåg

No direct bus connection. One daily bus departure to Alta. Stay overnight in Alta then continue to Honningsvåg, 1-2 daily departures.

 

Honningsvåg – Tromsø

One bus most days.

Honningsvåg – Nordkapp (North Cape)

45 mins. Bus service from early-June until late-August. At other times of the year, no bus service is available.

Honningsvåg – Karasjok

There are 1-2 departures daily, except Saturday

 

To Finland

Tromsø – Kilpisjärvi – Rovaniemi - Oulu: One daily departure from early-June until mid-September (11 hours). www.reiseinfo.no

Karasjok – Rovaniemi: one daily departure year-round

At other times of the year, public transport to Finland involves the long route via Narvik (bus), Luleå in Sweden (train) and then by bus to Rovaniemi, Kemi and Oulu.

 

Travelling around in Tromsø and Lyngen

The city of Tromsø has an excellent public transport service with frequent departures. The surrounding area is sparsely populated and, as a result, there are infrequent bus and boat connections. Trips in the surrounding area need to be carefully planned.

Car rental

Driving in the Tromsø area and in Northern Norway as a whole is a great way to experience this part of the country. During the summer months, rental cars are in high demand and advance bookings are highly recommended. At other times of the year, demand is lower, special rates are often available and advance bookings are not always necessary.

City Buses

Tromsbuss operates a network of buses with frequent departures throughout the city. Some important routes for visitors to Tromsø are.

Cable Car: Route 26 from outside Peppe’s Pizza. Ask for a combined bus/cable car ticket!

Arctic Cathedral: Routes 20, 24, 26 and 28 from Havnegata opposite the main market square

Tromsø Museum: Route 28 from outside Åhléns in Fredrik Langes gate

Transport to and from the airport

Tromsø Airport is centrally located, just 4 km from the city centre. The Airport Express Bus (Flybussen) costs NOK 45 one way and a typical one-way taxi fare is NOK 120-150. Bus routes 40 and 42 also serve the airport.

Tromsø – Sommarøy: one departure daily. Only during the summer school holiday is return same day transport possible.
